When you realize one day that Adele is wrong and you will never find anyone like her, you tend to keep her close and cherish every moment you have. When you realize no one will ever be quite as understanding or generous or eager to drive miles to take care of you when you’re sick, you tend to fall in love or infatuation or whatever word that defines the moment when your stomach flutters with excitement at every thought of her. When you realize that she’s been there for you more often than your friends, you tend to brag about how you’ve found not only a lover, but also a best friend. When you realize she’s the best kisser you’ve ever dated, you tend to spend a lot of time in bed doing things your parents forbade you to do. And when you realize that not a night has passed where you haven’t needed her voice to calm the treadmill in your mind, you also realize that she’s everything you needed in every way, every context. She’s the epitome of “that girl” and the paradigm of beauty. But at the end of the day, you should also realize that this kind of love isn’t meant to last forever. It’s a gift so ephemeral, so fleeting that it only comes around once in your life. We naive teenagers know them as boyfriends and girlfriends. But ask any adult and they’ll tell you something different. They’re your first loves, the ones that got away.
